Doral win ends Els drought

by Michelle Fortune , 15 March 2010

Ernie Els' two-year wait for a tour title came to an end on Sunday as he enjoyed a four-stroke victory in the WGC-CA Championship in Doral.

The South African began the day in a share of the lead with compatriot Charl Schwartzel but as his playing partner faltered Els produced a flawless six-under-par 66 to move to 18-under for the tournament.

Three birdies in the opening four holes set him up brilliantly and Els did not squander the opportunity, picking up another shot at the eighth before adding birdies at the 12th and 17th.

The victory, his 63rd professional title, will ensure Els returns to the world's top ten and he could hardly contain his delight at finally ending his drought.

"I've had a tough run and I really wanted to play well. I just wanted to prove it myself for once. I had to really trust the changes I've just made. The wind was blowing and you had to hit solid shots," he explained.

"Charl came at me all day and I have to take a lot of positives out of this."

Schwartzel had only dropped three shots during the week but three bogeys on the back nine ended any hope he had of adding to the two European Tour titles he has already won this season.

"He played flawless golf today, if you make six birdies and no bogeys on a windy day like this you are almost bound to win," said Schwartzel.

"But I played really well and this shows me that I can play against the best in the world. My time will come, I suppose."

He could do no better than a two-under-par 70 to finish second, three shots clear of a trio of players, including Ireland's Padraig Harrington.

The triple Major winner had moved into contention with a third round 67 but a level-par 72 was all he could manage on the final round to share third with Germany's Martin Kaymer and Matt Kuchar of America.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell was a further stroke back alongside Alistair Presnell, Alvaro Quiros, Paul Casey and Bill Haas.

Elsewhere Rory McIlroy finished in a share of 65th on seven-over-par.
