Inter Milan produced a masterclass of European football against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Samuel Eto'o scored the only goal of the game to give the Italian champions a 3-1 aggregate win, but Wesley Sneijder was the inspiration for Jose Mourinho's men.
Chelsea's Didier Drogba was sent off for stamping on Thiago Motta with four minutes to go.
Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho selected three forwards in Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito and Goran Pandev, resisting the temptation to defend deep and concede space despite holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg.
Florent Malouda saw any early run ended by Lucio in the penalty area but referee Wolfgang Stark felt the Inter defender won the ball, whilst Michael Ballack saw a shot from the edge of the area go wide.
However, Inter were looking sharp on the break, and Maicon's deep cross was misjudged by John Terry, but Eto'o headed into the ground and over the crossbar with just rookie Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull to beat.
Chelsea felt they should have had two penalties before the interval, first when Motta held Branislav Ivanovic at a corner, and then when Walter Samuel held Drogba from a corner after Nicolas Anelka had seen an effort saved.
Malouda saw a second half shot saved by Julio Cesar at the near post, but the Wesley Sneijder inspired Inter always looked the more likely side to score.
The Dutchman set up Eto'o, but the Cameroon international tarried and Zhirkov made a recovering tackle. The Russian also was the last man when Pandev seemed set to score from Sneijder's backheel.
But the goal finally came eleven minutes from time, when Sneijder played a superb ball over the top, and Eto'o took one touch before shooting beyond Turnbull.
After Drogba's dismissal, Turnbull made a great save to deny Eto'o a second in injury-time.
