New chapter in Cross-Country

by Michelle Fortune , 16 March 2010

There was an Irish winner in the Glenfarclas Handicap Cross Country Chase but it was Michael Hourigan's A New Story and not one of Enda Bolger's that got up to claim the spoils.

The Irish have farmed this race since it was added to the Festival programme and it was not surprise that they dominated the market for the 2010 renewal, although few would have predicted A New Story would prevail.

Garde Champetre was well backed to make it six wins over the cross-country course but a mistake at the Aintree-style fence five from home all but ended his chance of success.

Nina Carberry did well to get back into contention but she could not challenge in the manner which she would have liked and it was left to stable companion L'Ami to vie for the honours.

A superb leap at the last saw him take it up from Lacdoudal but A New Story was flying under Adrian Heskin and on the long run to the line he eased passed his rival to claim the honours by two and a half lengths.

Lacdoudal took third, two and three-quarter lengths back, with Another Jewel finishing strongly to take fourth.

"Absolutely brilliant," Heskin said of his first ever Festival ride. "I could not have asked for a better ride. I did not want to get there too early as he can idle, but he jumps so well and is very clever."
