Wayne Bridge is facing a month on the sidelines after undergoing a hernia operation on Tuesday.
The Manchester City full-back aggravated the long-standing injury during the 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday and after consultations with a specialist it was decided surgery was the best option.
As a result he is expected to be out of action for up to a month, meaning he will miss a crucial phase of the season as City challenge for a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League.
The 29-year-old, who has only returned from a 13-game spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, will miss the games against Fulham, Everton, Wigan, Burnley and Birmingham, although he could be fit to face Manchester United on April 17.
