Federer slumps to Baghdatis defeat

by Michelle Fortune , 17 March 2010

Roger Federer suffered a shock defeat to Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the third round at the BNP Paribas Open after wasting three match points.

The Swiss number one had survived a scare in the previous round and a number of unforced errors resulted in him letting a lead slip to allow Baghdatis progress 5-7 7-5 7-6.

Baghdatis had never managed to beat Federer in their previous six encounters and it looked as though the losing streak would be extended to seven when he was down 15-40 at 5-4 in the second.

However, Federer sent two shots long to give Baghdatis some hope and the Cypriot did not squander the opportunity, holding serve before taking the set.

Federer raced into a 3-1 lead in the third and despite being broken in the seventh game the world number one found himself with match point at 6-5. However, once again he failed to see off his opponent and the match went to a tie-break, which Baghdatis duly won.

"It was one of those matches where you play well most of the time, and don't play well when you really have to," said Federer.

A delighted Baghdatis said: "I did everything well, because Roger had a great percentage of first serves. One moment he was playing only with first serves, so it was really tough to return. But I kept calm."

Andy Murray was also given a test by American Michael Russell but the British number one did not follow Federer out of the Indian Wells ATP tournament.

Murray broke early in both sets and although Russell put up some resistance over the course of match he could not break back as the Scot secured a place in the fourth round with a 6-3 7-6 win.

Nicolas Almagro was a 6-4 3-6 6-3 winner over James Blake and his reward is a clash with Murray in the next round, while, Tommy Robredo awaits Baghdatis following his 6-3 6-0 win over Dudi Sela.

Elsewhere Andy Roddick defeated Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands 6-3 6-4 with Robin Soderling defeating Feliciano Lopez 7-6 6-4.
