United face battle for target

Manchester United may face a battle to secure reported target Manuel Neuer after Bayern Munich confirmed their interest in the keeper.

Neuer currently plays for Bundesliga side Schalke 04 but it is thought United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford in the summer to act as an understudy to Edwin van der Sar.

United have been heavily linked with a move for a keeper, with Lyon's Hugo Lloris also reported to be in Ferguson's thoughts, with questions surrounding the future of current back-up keepers Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak.

The Schalke stopper, who is tipped to be included in Germany's World Cup squad, is thought to be Ferguson's top target but the United boss may face a battle to secure his signature after Bayern Munich admitted they were also monitoring Neuer's situation.

Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "Neuer is a goalkeeper which we are generally impressed with. If Schalke indicated a willingness to discuss him, we are ready to talk."

United have also been linked with Atletico Madrid keeper David De Gea and CSKA Moscow stopper Igor Akinfeev in recent months and it seems likely Ferguson will bring in a new goalkeeper during the summer.
