Walsh makes history on Sanctuaire

Ruby Walsh became the winning-most jockey in Cheltenham Festival history when steering Sanctuaire to an easy win in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle.

Walsh had drawn level with Pat Taaffe on 25 winners when he was successful aboard Quevega on Tuesday and his victory aboard the Paul Nicholls-trained four-year-old ensured he moved to the top of the table.

Walsh raced the 4-1 favourite in mid-division but he carved his way through the field coming down the hill and he was on the shoulders of the leaders as they swung into the straight.

It was only a matter of time before Walsh let his mount go and when he did he eased to the front before streaking away to win by nine lengths.

Notus De La Tour took second with Orsippus and Son Amix finishing third and fourth respectively.

"He's a bit free so we thought the Fred Winter could be a good race in which to get him to settle," Walsh said.

"I did think the mark they gave him after his Taunton win was a great one."

Winning trainer Paul Nicholls added: "We had some problems with him when he first came over (from France) and at first we couldn't get him on to the gallop.

"But he clearly has a lot of ability and he'll be even more the finished product after a summer out.

"Obviously he can't run in a handicap again and so I'll probably run him in the juvenile hurdle at Aintree."
