Fantastic Fulham rout Juve

Fulham achieved the most incredible result in their history by routing nine-man Juventus 4-1 at Craven Cottage on Thursday night to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League 5-4 on aggregate.

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg in Turin, few pundits gave the Cottagers any chance of turning the tie around and they appeared to be sending for a rather ignominious exit when they fell behind to a David Trezeguet strike after just two minutes of play.

However, Bobby Zamora posted a swift riposte for Fulham before the tie turned decisively in their favour on 27 minutes following the dismissal of Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro for a professional foul on Zoltan Gera.

The latter then put Fulham 2-1 up on the night when he tapped home just before the break and the former West Bromwich Albion striker converted a penalty moments after the break to level the tie on aggregate.

Fulham then clinched victory with just over eight minutes to go courtesy of the most audacious chip from the edge of the box from substitute Clinton Dempsey.

Juventus' humiliation was completed in injury time when Jonathan Zebina picked up a straight red for lashing out at Damien Duff.

It was a remarkable comeback and one which nobody would have dared predict when Trezeguet put Juventus three goals up on aggregate after just over 90 seconds of play, the Frenchman firing home from some 15 yards out after a poor clearance from Brede Hangeland.

However, Fulham got themselves right back into the game less than seven minutes later, Zamora vindicating his controversial comments concerning Fabio Cannavaro's waning defensive capabilities by shrugging the veteran Italian defender out of the way before chesting down Paul Konchesky's left-wing cross and then calmly guiding the ball past Antonio Chimenti.

Things were to get worse for Juve, and Cannavaro, on 27 minutes when the World Cup winner was rather harshly shown a red card for pulling down Gera outside the box as the Hungarian tried to get on the end of a through-ball. Cannavaro had undoubtedly impeded Gera but it did not look like a professional foul as Fabio Grosso appeared well placed to snuff out the danger.

Now with the benefit of a numerical advantage, Fulham poured forward and twice went agonisingly close to taking the lead on the night. First, Simon Davies struck the bar with a free-kick from wide on the left before Dickson Etuhu crashed a header from a corner against the post.

The Cottagers' frustration did not last long, though, as the second goal they were so desperate to attain before the half-time interval arrived on 39 minutes, Gera turning in Davies' low centre from close range after the latter had been played in by a delightful first-time pass from Zamora on the edge of the box.

Juve were reeling and they needed a solid start to the second half if they were to have any hope of holding on to their slender advantage. However, within two minutes of the restart, the tie was level on aggregate, Gera firing home for the spot after Diego had been penalised for handling Duff's attempted cross.

Credit to the visitors, they tried to dig in and frustrated Fulham for long periods. However, a moment of magic ultimately decided the game in the home side's favour. There appeared to be little danger to the Juventus goal when Dempsey, with his back to goal, picked up the ball on the edge of the Fulham goal but the American turned well before beating Chimenti with the most sublime chip into the far corner.

Realising the tie was now over, Juventus completely lost their discipline in the remaining ten minutes and Jonathan Zebina earned himself a straight red card for a petulant kick out at Duff in the dying seconds.
