Saracens have granted Wikus van Heerden an early release from his contract, thus paving the way for the former Springbok to link up with the Lions for the remainder of their Super 14 campaign.
Van Heerden arrived at Vicarage Road in 2008 on a two-year contract and had been expected to see out the season with Sarries.
However, the Johannesburg-based Lions successfully managed to persuade the Guinness Premiership outfit to release the player early.
Sarries director of rugby Brendan Venter admitted that he was sad to see van Heerden leave but was quick to pay tribute to his contribution to the club over the past two seasons.
"Wikus has produced many outstanding performances for Saracens and we wish him and his family well," the South African coach said.
