United face Bayern, Gunners to meet Barca

by JP Lonergan , 19 March 2010

Manchester United have been drawn to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Arsenal face holders Barcelona.

The draw was made at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday, with the games involving the English sides seeing see repeats of the 1999 and 2006 finals when United and the Gunners were winners and losers respectively.

United famously defeated Bayern in the 1999 final with late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though were beaten in the quarter-finals in 2001 as the Bundesliga side went on to win the tournament. This time around the English champions and 2008 winners are away in the first leg.

If United can overcome the Germans - who defeated Fiorentina in the last eight while the Red Devils were downing AC Milan - they will face French opposition in the semi-final after Lyon and Bordeux were paired with each other. That could see United boss Sir Alex Ferguson go into managerial opposition with his former centre-back Laurent Blanc should Bordeux go through.

Arsenal face a daunting task against the mighy Barcelona, who defeated them 2-1 in the final four years ago. It will see former North London legend Thierry Henry face his old club. Barca looked very strong when ousting Stuttgart this week and Arsenal will need to play like they did in the second leg of their last 16 game with Porto rather than how they did in the first. The Gunners start at home.

The winners of that tie could come up against Jose Mourinho after his Inter Milan side - perfect conquerors of Chelsea in the last 16 - drew Russian surprise package CSKA Moscow in the fourth quarter-final.

Finally, whichever one of the quartet of United, Bayern, Lyon or Bordeaux make the final will be the home team in Madrid on May 22 and will wear first-choice colours in the event of a clash.

Champions League Quarter-Final Draw:

Lyon v Bordeaux
Bayern Munich v Manchester United
Arsenal v Barcelona
Inter Milan v CSKA Moscow

Semi-Final Draw:

Bayern Munich/Manchester United v Lyon /Bordeaux
Inter Milan/CSKA Moscow v Arsenal/Barcelona

The first legs of the last eight ties will be played on March 30/31 with the second legs a week later.
