Walsh has Stars in her eyes

by Oli Skehan , 19 March 2010

An incredible week for the Walsh family dynasty at Cheltenham got better on Friday as Katie Walsh recorded her second win in four days aboard the Willie Mullins-trained Thousand Stars in the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle.

Dee Eee Williams (20-1), in the hands of Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell took up the running turning for home and had them stretched a few furlongs from the line but Walsh got the sweetest tune out of the grey to make it seven winners for the Irish at Prestbury Park.

Thousand Stars went to post at tasty odds of 20-1 and had three lengths to spare over the strong-finishing veteran Arcalis (33-1) with Dee Eee Williams hanging on for third a further one-and-a-quarter lengths back.

Incidentally, Denis O'Regan, who rode Arcalis, subequently received a three-day ban after weighing in 3lbs overweight.

Tom Georges's 50-1 shot Zanir filled the remaining place in the Grade Three contest.

"I can't believe it, this is unbelievable, you cannot write this stuff," said Walsh, who rode Poker De Sivola to victory in the National Hunt Chase on Wednesday for Ferdy Murphy.

"He hasn't even settled in really.

"I must say a big thank you to Willie Mullins. He has been fantastic to me, he didn't have to leave me on this horse but he did.

"I was unlucky in the Pierse and when I got to the front he pricked his ears."

Mullins said: "I'm delighted and Katie is so cool and a fantastic rider. "Even though she rides as an amateur, she's got the brain of a professional and is fit and well.

"I love putting her up so it's fantastic for her, fantastic for me and everyone."
