NHL Div 1: Deise and Rebels share spoils

by Oli Skehan , 21 March 2010

Waterford's Eoin Kelly notched up an incredible 1-17 but it was not enough to bag his side maximum points against unbeaten Cork in Division One of the Allianz NHL at sundrenched Walsh Park.

The home side had to settle for a share of the spoils in what was a high-scoring encounter that ended 2-20 to 3-17 in the end.

Kelly, operating at midfield, registered all but 1-3 of the Deise's total of 2-20, as they showed great spirity to come from behind on a number of occasions to draw with Denis Walsh's side.

The Rebels had the better of things in the opening 35 minutes with Michael Cussen racking up an impressive tally of 2-2 from the edge of the square as the men from Leeside went in a goal up at the break.

The second period of play was played at a ferocious pace at times and substitute Pat Horgan's goal for Cork on 53 minutes looked to given the Rebels the advantage but Davy Fitzgerald's men hit back on 61 minutes through Thomas Ryan's well-taken goal.

Ben O'Connor put Cork ahead with a free, his eight point of the day, with only a couple of minutes to go but Kelly was not finished and he fittingly levelled things up with his 14th free of the day.

In the day's other matches Kilkenny had to pull out all the stops to ward off a determined Dublin challenge at Parnell Park.

Richie Power scored the Cats two goals as they ran out narrow 2-21 to 0-23 winners with David Heraghty particularly impressive for the reigning league and All-Ireland champions.

Elsewhere, Munster champions Tipperary hammered Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds on a 2-22 to 0-8 scoreline.

The away side led comfortably at the break and John O'Brien's second-half goal along with the dismissal of Limerick's Dean Madded after 47 minutes put the final nail in Limerick's coffin.
