Dundee United end Ross County dream

by Tony Cuddihy , 15 May 2010

Dundee United are Scottish Cup champions after they beat minnows Ross County 3-0 at Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon.

The first 45 minutes were goalless, with the best opportunity of the half falling to David Goodwillie. However, the United striker failed to control Craig Conway's pass adequately and Alex Keddie recovered to tackle brilliantly.

Danny Swanson headed just wide from a cross by Morgaro Gomis in the 55th minute, but the greater class of Dundee United told just six minutes later.

A long ball forward by Gomis was inexplicably headed out by Michael McGovern into the path of Goodwillie, who chested the ball down 25 yards out before calmly lobbing the ball over McGovern.

Conway, the best player for United, made it 2-0 with a quarter of an hour left in the match. He latched on to a Goodwillie flick-on and outpaced Gary Miller before skipping past Keddie and slipping the ball underneath McGovern.

Substitute Garry Wood had a chance to reduce the arrears for Ross County but he scuffed his shot on goal after taking advantage of a mistake by Gomis.

Conway grabbed his second, and United's third, four minutes from time. Jon Daly flicked a throw-in into the path of Gomis, with the midfielder slipping the ball across for Conway to score on the half volley.
