Buffon delays back surgery

by Setanta Staff , 19 June 2010

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will play through the pain barrier for as long as his country remains in the World Cup.

Buffon has a herniated disc and was forced to come off during Italy's opening match against Paraguay when the pain got too much.

He needs an operation on the problem but has decided to put off the surgery until after the World Cup.

"I thought a lot about it. But I have to think about myself before anything else," Buffon said.

"I will have an operation in Italy after the World Cup."
