Holland striker Robin van Persie has called on his team-mates to become immortals on Sunday.
The Dutch take on Spain in the World Cup final at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium and – with both teams in search of their first World Cup crown – van Persie says the time has come for Holland to join the competition’s roll of honour.
Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina and France have all tasted worldwide glory before. Holland’s semi-final win over the first of those winners on Tuesday leaves them with six wins from six in South Africa.
Van Persie says it is now their duty to make it seven from seven, especially given that the country has twice before lost finals, in 1974 and 1978.
"It is a bit difficult because you have to fight against the generation of 1974 and 1978," the Arsenal forward said ahead of Sunday’s clash with the European champions.
"They were unbelievable. They are legends, (Johan) Cruyff, Johan Neeskens and so on.
“You grew up with their names in your face. When those people say anything in the press or on a TV programme everybody listens because of what they have achieved.
"If we win it for the first time it will be unbelievable because basically it means that we have done better than them."
