Preview: Dubs run to end at Red Hands

by Setantasports.com staff , 30 July 2010

As usual, the Dubs get top billing this weekend as they get their first real glamour encounter of the year - since the debacle against Meath at any rate - when they clash with Tyrone in the All-Ireland quarter-final (Tyrone v Dublin, Croke Park, Saturday 4pm).

It has certainly been a difficult campaign for Pat Gilroy's side, with choppy team selections, listless performances and a real lack of confidence in the side. Only with the resounding win over Louth did the Dubs look anything like their old selves, although a caveat must surely be Louth's failure to get going in that match until it was really too late.

Tyrone on the other hand, remain Tyrone. They have gone about their business quietly, playing within themselves and never looking truly ruffled in Ulster, or at least, very composed in their response any time an opponent has briefly threatened them.

Mickey Harte's side will be a huge step up for Dublin at this fragile stage in their development under Gilroy, and it is difficult to see them mounting a realistic challenge.

Yes, Dublin will work extremely hard all over the field to disrupt their opponents, and have a sprinkling of influential and improving players, but perhaps it will only be in the course of time that Gilroy can make his mark with this side.

Tyrone, by contrast, are very much the finished article, with every player able to defend, attack, take scores or make tackles - this is why it's said they play total football and against such a fluid, slick and well organised machine, it's hard to see Dublin doing anything besides struggle.

Tyrone: P McConnell; C McCarron, J McMahon, R McMenamin; D Harte, C Gormley, P Jordan; C Cavanagh, K Hughes; B Dooher, B McGuigan, J McMahon; M Penrose, S Cavanagh, O Mulligan

Dublin: S Cluxton; M Fitzsimons, R O'Carroll, P McMahon; K Nolan, G Brennan, B Cahill; R McConnell, MD Macauley; N Corkery, A Brogan, B Cullen; D Henry (captain), E O'Gara, B Brogan
