Stoke see off Shrewsbury

Jon Walters and Tuncay Sanli netted as Stoke progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury.

Walters' first goal for the club came in the 26th minute, some consolation perhaps after his legitimate injury-time goal against Tottenham on Saturday was chalked off.

The former Ipswich forward flicked a header beyond Shrews' goalkeeper Chris Neal after getting on the end of a good cross from Matthew Etherington.

Neal was beaten by another header scored from an Etherington cross 11 minutes later, with Tuncay this time the grateful recipient of the inch-perfect delivery from the winger.

Etherington was putting in an impressive shift, and almost netted in the 54th minute only for Neal to turn the ball around the post.

However, Shrewsbury, who up to then had only had two shots on the Stoke goal, pulled one back on 79 minutes, when Steven Leslie headed home at the far post from close range.
