Coulter: I was in the square

by Dave Maher , 30 August 2010

Down's Benny Coulter has admitted that his goal against Kildare in Sunday's Senior Football Championship semi-final should not have counted.

Replay showed that Coulter was already in the square when a long ball from Martin Clarke reached the area in the 13th minute, before the full forward fisted a finish into the net.

"I think I was (in the square), yeah," Coulter admitted after his side's 1-16 to 1-14 victory.

Down manager James McCartan also conceded that the goal should probably not have stood.

"When you are along the line, you don't see a lot of the marginal incidents," he saod. "If the goal was a square-ball, we will take the bit of luck."

Kildare came within a whisker of booking their place in the SFC final when Robert Kelly's free-kick hit the underside of the crossbar, and McCartan admitted it was a nervy end to the encounter.

"With seven or eight minutes to go we were six points up, but I certainly knew the game wasn't won," he insisted.

"You'd hope to close it out from there, but they kept coming and coming.

"We were probably hanging on at the end, to see the ball hit the crossbar, we were just relieved to see it stay out."
