Lee Westwood will be fit for the Ryder Cup but his manager has warned that he will not play any competitive golf before the Celtic Manor event.
The European number one is currently on the sidelines after being advised to rest for six weeks to allow a calf injury to recover and recent reports have suggested that the Englishman was facing a race to be fit for the Ryder Cup.
Manager Chubby Chandler has denied the reports by insisting that Westwood is a week ahead of schedule but he has admitted that his client will not play competitively until he takes on the Americans at the Welsh course next month.
"He's actually a week ahead of schedule and will start chipping and putting shortly before moving on to the long game next week," Chandler is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.
"There's no question it's been a frustrating time for all of us but it's coming to an end. Lee's as fired up as I've seen him. He's been working hard in the gym, has lost weight and will definitely make it."
Westwood announced that he would not play in the USPGA Championship and would miss up to six weeks when he withdrew midway through the Bridgestone Invitational.
It will be 74 days since the Englishman played competitive golf when the Ryder Cup tees off on October 1 but European captain Colin Montgomerie has no worries about his lack of action.
It is a worry when you have a player who has been out that long," Montgomerie said.
"But against that he will have three practice rounds at Celtic Manor and is a vastly experienced competitor. I've certainly got no qualms about him being there having not played a tournament."
