Celtic go five clear

Celtic are five points clear of Rangers at the top of the SPL, thanks to Anthony Stokes' first-half goal against Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

Rangers lost at Hearts 1-0 earlier in the day, although the champions have two games in hand on their Glasgow rivals.

The only goal came in the 27th minute, when the Irish striker ran on to a Gary Hooper pass to round Dons' keeper Jamie Langfield before sidefooting the ball into an empty net.

Aberdeen had suffered a club record 9-0 defeat at Celtic Park on November 6, but were far more impressive under new manager Craig Brown, under whom the Pittodrie side had won four out of their last five games.

Celtic might have had a breakaway second five minutes before the interval, when Stokes sent Gary Hooper down the right before receiving the return ball, but Langfield saved from 12 yards.

In the 75th minute former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg replaced Pat McCourt to make his home debut.
