Mexes hints at Italy stay

by Setanta Staff , 27 March 2011

Reported Arsenal target Phillipe Mexes has said that he would prefer to stay in Serie A when his contract expires at Roma.

The France international defender has been linked to the Gunners and Premiership rivals Liverpool.

Serie A outfit AC Milan are also said to be showing an interest in the 28-year-old.

The former Toulouse and Auxere man appears to be in no rush to get his contract situation sorted out at the Olympic Stadium, saying that he will make a decision over the next few months.

He said: "It's true that I'll be out of contract, but I am quite relaxed about the situation.

"I will wait and then evaluate all proposals."

However, Mexes - capped 21 times by his country - did say that ideally he would like to continue to ply his trade in Italy. Speaking to the media in his native France, he added: "Milan? There is talk of that, but also of a renewal with Roma or a transfer to England.

"I have nothing in particular to add, other than to say that if I did leave Roma, I'd prefer to stay in Italy."
