Derry apology after ambulance oversight

by JP Lonergan , 29 March 2011

Derry GAA secretary Liam Peoples has apologised after no ambulance was on hand to transport London’s Niall Healy to hospital on Sunday.

The Oak Leaf hurlers were one-point winners over the Exiles at Banagher as they booked their place in the Allianz Hurling League Division 3A final, but as well as losing the game London also lost their defender to a broken collarbone.

Healy had to wait for a spell before an ambulance arrived for him, with Peoples admitting it was an oversight that would not usually occur.

He told the Irish News: "We usually do have an ambulance at the venue and on this occasion it took a little while to get there. There is usually a doctor at the game.

"The player was taken off just before half-time and at half-time he was looking for an ambulance.

“Shortly after the second half started the ambulance was there. We usually have a St John's ambulance at the major games.

“This was an oversight."
