Commons strikes winner for Celtic

by Tony Cuddihy , 09 April 2011

A late strike by Kris Commons against St. Mirren helped Celtic to extend their lead at the top of the SPL to five points, the Bhoys winning 1-0 at Celtic Park.

Former Derby star Commons replaced Freddie Ljungberg after 70 minutes and his introduction had the desired effect as he collected a pass from Shaun Maloney and lashed the ball past Paul Gallacher from twelve yards.

The first half was a drab affair, with little by way of chances. Kenny McLean blasted wide for St. Mirren after a poor free-kick by Michael Higdon, while Anthony Stokes saw his header flash wide from ten yards.

Charlie Mulgrew later nodded over from a Ki free-kick, while James Forrest dragged a shot wide of goal.

The second half saw Maloney replace the ineffective Gary Hooper and Celtic started well. Stokes brought a fine save out of Gallacher, while Maloney fired a tame shot wide.

The match was devoid of quality, however, and seemed to be heading for a stalemate before Commons' intervention.

Saints could have snatched a late draw with their best chance of the game, but John Potter fired his effort wide.
