Shamrock deny Sligo in Setanta

Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk will go head-to-head in the Setanta Sports Cup final after the former put paid to Sligo Rovers hopes of reaching the decider on Tuesday night.

Rovers took a 2-0 first-leg lead back to Tallaght Stadium and they did not disappoint their supporters as they got the better of their rivals to complete a 4-1 aggregate win.

Things looked good for Sligo after three minutes when Eoin Doyle got them on the scoreboard but goals from Karl Sheppard and Billy Dennehy put paid to any hopes they had to facing Dundalk in the Cup final.

Sligo looked determined as the game got underway and their attacking set-up was rewarded just three minutes in when Doyle got on the end of Alan Keane's well-worked cross to head his side into the lead.

However, their advantage lasted just five minutes as Rovers hit back thanks in part to some slopping defending from Sligo.

Brendan Clarke had saved Dennehy's strike but when another cross was not cleared Sheppard was on hand to fire home from 14 yards.

Rovers took control from there and could have gained the lead just minutes later when Ronan Finn sent a low drive at the Sligo goal. It looked on course to hit the target only for the woodwork to get in the way.

Finn, however, was instrumental in Rovers taking the lead when he pulled back for Dennehy, who easily slotted home in the 25th minute.

Sligo tried everything to get back into the tie and went close through Alan Mannus, but they never really troubled Rovers at the back and they had little trouble progressing to the May 14 final.
