Ronaldo sets new scoring record

Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new record for goalscoring in single season of the Primera Liga.

Madrid beat Almeria 8-1 on Saturday, with Ronaldo scoring twice. His first of the game, and his 39th league goal of the season, came after four minutes of the clash, and broke the record previously held jointly by Real's Hugo Sanchez and Athletic Bilbao's Telmo Zarra.

Ronaldo netted his second goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining to see him finish two clear of the previous scoring mark.

"To score so many goals in a season is very hard," said the former Manchester United forward. "I have to thank my team-mates. The record is for them and the fans too.

"It's good to finish the season in the best manner possible."

Real finished four points behind rivals Barcelona, as the Catalan club claimed another Primera Liga title.
