Benitez offered Atletico job

Rafael Benitez has been offered the manager’s position at Atletico Madrid for next season, according to reports.

Benitez had a poor spell with European champions Inter Milan for the first half of last season, but has now been offered an ‘extremely attractive’ opportunity by Atletico to return to management, according to the Times.

Benitez has been linked with a return to the Premier League, but has told the Spanish club that he will consider their offer while he goes on holiday, and then make a decision when he returns.

The former Liverpool manager has been an admirer of Atletico for a long time, back to when he was starting his coaching career with the Real Madrid youth teams.

“I have always had sympathy for Atletico Madrid, because, among other things, I have friends there and my father always liked Atletico,” said Benitez back in February.

“He said he was going to support Atletico Madrid ahead of Real and I have always had much sympathy for them since. The team has always seemed spectacular, especially their fans.”

Benitez is expected to return from his holiday in 10 days time.
