Meath and Louth to renew rivalries

by JP Lonergan , 12 June 2011

Meath and Louth will cross swords in the first round of the GAA Football All-Ireland qualifiers.

The sides, who last met in last year’s Leinster final, will face off on Saturday June 25 after Louth fell victim to a shock Carlow win on Sunday and the Royals were beaten by Kildare last week.

When they last met, Joe Sheridan’s ‘goal that wasn’t’ won the day at Croke Park, and the Wee men are surely going to be motivated by thoughts of revenge. If they get their way it could spell an early end in the Meath hotseat for manager Seamus McEnaney, whose future comes into question almost daily at the moment.

Elsewhere in Sunday’s draw in Carrick-on-Shannon, last year’s All-Ireland runners-up Down were given a favourable draw against Clare, while Monaghan – who pushed Tyrone hard a week ago – will fancy their chances of getting past Offaly.

Cavan, beaten by Donegal in Sunday’s Ulster quarter-final, will face neighbours Longford, while Laois will look to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Dublin by beating the Tipperary side that gave them a surprise in 2010.

Meanwhile, Fermanagh must take on London, Mick O’Dwyer’s Wicklow will play Sligo and Antrim will be Westmeath’s opponents after their Leinster exit to Wexford on Saturday.

GAA Football All-Ireland qualifier draw:
Clare v Down
Laois v Tipperary
Westmeath v Antrim
Louth v Meath
London v Fermanagh
Cavan v Longford
Wicklow v Sligo
Offaly v Monaghan
