'Sparrow' flies the coop

Ger O’Loughlin has stepped down as manager of the Clare hurling after only a year and a half at the helm.

O’Loughlin has been manager of the Banner County’s senior hurling team since December 2009, but has decided to call it a day following the team’s disappointing run of form.

A two-time All-Ireland winner as a player, O’Loughlin failed to lead Clare out of Division 2 of the Allianz League, while his side crashed out of the Munster Championship against Tipperary, while they were heavily defeated 4-25 to 0-20 against Galway in the All-Ireland Championship preliminary rounds.

O’Loughlin is believed to have informed the Clare County board of his decision at a meeting that was held on Wednesday night.
