Exeter tie for Liverpool

by JP Lonergan , 11 August 2011

Exeter City have been handed the plum tie in the second round of the Carling Cup, in which they will host Liverpool.

Kenny Dalglish’s men will travel to St James’ Park as their lack of European involvement sees them enter the competition earlier than usual. Northampton Town, the League Two side who knocked Liverpool out early on last year, have the chance to shock another top flight side when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers in this year’s second round.

Everton will host Sheffield United, while Scunthorpe United have another exciting home draw with Newcastle United due at Glanford Park. Steve Bruce’s Sunderland face a tricky looking trip to Brighton, Blackburn host Sheffield Wednesday after they ousted Blackpool on penalties on Thursday, Roy Hodgson’s West Brom will travel to Bournemouth and Aston Villa - whose manager Alex McLeish led Birmingham City to victory in last season's competition - will welcome Hereford United.

Crystal Palace’s first round clash with Crawley Town was one of five ties postponed this week because of the riots that swept the UK. The eventual winners will host Premier League Wigan Athletic, while Bolton Wanderers will welcome Macclesfield after they shocked Hull this week. Premier League new boys QPR and Norwich have home draws against Rochdale and MK Dons respectively, while Swansea will travel to Derby County’s midweek conquerors Shrewsbury Town.

The majority of the second round fixtures will be played in the week of August 22, but some of the outstanding first round ties have been rescheduled for that week so some fans will have to wait for their team’s ties.
