Arsenal are expected to make a third bid to sign Everton defender Phil Jagielka this week, after completing the sale of Cesc Fabregas.
The Gunners have made no secret of the fact that they want to strengthen their defensive options before the transfer window closes, with Jagielka their top target.
Everton have stood firm so far, turning down two previous bids, but they will find it very difficult to reject another improved offer for the England international.
Arsene Wenger is often reluctant to spend big but the money received from Barcelona for Fabregas, believed to be around £30million, could see the Frenchman loosen the purse strings.
David Moyes and the Everton board have a tough decision to make - do they sell one of their best players in order to be able to fund deals for two or three new players or do they keep the man seen as a future captain.
