Three match ban for Song

by Michelle Fortune , 17 August 2011

Alex Song will serve a three-match ban after deciding against appealing a Football Association charge of violent conduct.

Song was hit by the charge for an incident during Arsenal's dramatic draw against Newcastle on Saturday in which he appeared to stamp on the leg of opponent Joey Barton as he lay on the ground.

The incident was not caught by the referee on the day but Song was charged after the FA viewed video footage of the match.

He had until Thursday to respond to the charge but he has waived his right to a hearing and will now miss the games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Swansea.

New team-mate Gervinho will miss the same three matches after failing in his appeal against his red card for slapping Barton.

"Arsenal's Alex Song will begin a three match suspension with immediate effect after he accepted a charge of violent conduct," a statement on the FA website confirmed.

"Song was charged following in incident during Arsenal's fixture at Newcastle United on Saturday 13 August."
