Fulham overcome Dnipro

by Setanta Staff , 18 August 2011

Fulham beat Ukrainian side Dnipro 3-0 in the Europa League play-off first leg at Craven Cottage, thanks to Aaron Hughes' opener and Clint Dempsey's headed brace.

The Czech side initially looked organised at the back, though they offered little up front at any point in the game.

Former Fulham goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka, who had a loan spell at Craven Cottage in the 2006/07 season, made a good save in the fourth minute from Matthew Briggs, and also dealt well with a Steve Sidwell effort from a corner.

Defender Aaron Hughes opened the scoring six minutes before the break, when he poked home Briggs' cross from the byline, after a slip in the build-up by Giuliano.

Four minutes later Dempsey doubled the home side's advantage when he met Sidwell's right-wing cross having evaded the Dnipro defence to ghost into the area.

Four minutes after the break, Dempsey scored his second of the night, heading home Kasami's cross.

Ievgenii Cherberiachko went close twice, and Denys Kulakov saw a 20-yard shot go over, but Fulham were out of sight by now, and it was Lastuvka who was the busier goalkeeper in the final half-hour.
