Tottenham humiliate Hearts

Tottenham thrashed Hearts 5-0 in the Europa League play-off first leg at Tynecastle on Thursday.

Rafael van der Vaart, Jermain Defoe and Jake Livermore netted in the first half, whilst Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon scored in the second as the Premier League side showed the Scottish team the gulf in class between the two leagues.

Brought up on the Saturday evening classified results, the broadcaster Danny Baker told his followers on Twitter that, when growing up, he believed that teams finishing bottom in Division Four would be relegated to the Scottish Premier League.

On this evidence, it seems a fair supposition, given how dominant Tottenham were in Edinburgh. Their first touches were lightning quick, their movement exemplary, and their goals inevitable.

The first came after four minutes, when van der Vaart finished coolly after the Jambos' defence had failed to clear after the Dutchman's attempted one-two with Defoe.

Nine minutes later, the England striker made it 2-0, with a fine finish after Lennon had broken from the right wing and exchanged passes with van der Vaart, before releasing Defoe to take one touch and emphatically finish with a left-footed shot.

Livermore netted his first Tottenham goal in the 28th minute, after being set up by Defoe following another flowing Tottenham move.

Hearts had Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes panicking slightly in the first moments of the second half, after a couple of Jamie Hamill corners, but Andy Webster was denied by some resolute Tottenham defending.

It proved a false dawn, with Spurs making it four on 63 minutes through Bale's cool finish. The Welshman rounded Hearts' goalkeeper Marian Kello when running on to Tom Huddlestone's chipped pass over the defence, in a move that had started seconds before from Gomes' throw-out.

Lennon then converted Defoe's 78th minute cross from close range to wrap up the scoring. It was a night where the full house at Tynecastle knew that they had been taught a footballing lesson, and the home fans rose to acclaim Bale and van der Vaart when they were substituted in the second half.
