O'Rourke leaves Lilywhites role

by JP Lonergan , 19 August 2011

Aidan O'Rourke has left his role as assistant manager to Kildare football boss Kieran McGeeney.

Armagh man O’Rourke has worked with his fellow 2002 All-Ireland winner for the past two years, but has decided to step away from the role because of the travelling involved.

O’Rourke has had to make six-hour round trips for training sessions in Newbridge and, just like predecessor Paul Grimley, has decided to leave the role for that reason.

McGeeney will now look for a new assistant as he prepares for a fifth season in charge of the Lilywhites. Niall Carew is expected to remain on as a selector.

Kildare were edged out by Donegal in extra-time in July’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final.

Last year, in O’Rourke’s other season as McGeeney’s assistant, they reached the semi-finals, bowing out to 2010 runners-up Down.
