Second-half goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over West Brom at Stamford Bridge.
However, the London side were given an early scare when Shane Long opened the scoring for Roy Hodgson's men.
The Baggies took a shock lead in the fourth minute, when Alex lost possession after being sold short by Jose Bosingwa's pass. Long nicked the ball off the Brazilian, progressed towards goal and sidefooted past Hilario.
Long could have set up a second for the visitors in the 25th minute, after being released by a Chris Brunt ball, but the Ireland international's cross was too far in front of Somen Tchoyi.
Chelsea's first real chance came in the 41st minute, but Ashley Cole's top corner bound drive was tipped behind by West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Referee Lee Mason faced the wrath of the Chelsea crowd two minutes later when he decreed that Foster got a touch of the ball before bringing down Anelka in the area.
In the end, it took a lucky deflection for The Blues to level in the 53rd minute.
Anelka, having been set up by Frank Lampard, saw his shot take a deflection off the heel of Jonas Olsson and whistle past Foster and into the far corner.
Anelka missed a good chance on the breakaway before Malouda hit the winner with eight minutes to go, netting at the far post from Bosingwa's sumptuous cross, after the Portuguese had ghosted past James Morrison and Nicky Shorey.
