QPR shock sorry Everton

Tommy Smith scored the only goal of the game, as Queen's Park Rangers beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Neil Warnock's men were humbled last week, going down 4-0 at home to Bolton, but were resolute on their travels to wrap up their first win of the season, and their first top-flight win since 1996.

QPR hearts were in their mouths early on when Jack Rodwell went down after a rash Matt Connolly tackle, but referee Kevin Friend decided that no offence had been committed.

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, making his Premier League debut after recovering from a triple leg fracture last season, was instrumental in creating the Toffees' best chance of the first half.

The 17-year-old was brought down by Fitz Hall on the edge of the area after cutting inside from the right, but Leighton Baines' subsequent free-kick thundered against the underside of the bar and out.

However, the newly promoted Londoners took the lead in the 31st minute after a mistake by Phil Jagielka, who wastefully conceded possession to Alejandro Faurlin.

Faurlin released Akos Buzsaky down the left and he found Tommy Smith, who dropped the shoulder and curled a cool finish past Tim Howard.

Jason Beckford and Tim Cahill both had half-chances with headers before the break, but neither troubled Paddy Kenny in the Everton goal.

Rodwell had an early second-half chance for the home side from John Heitinga's pass, but Kenny easily saved his left-footed shot. Substitute Marouane Fellaini then set up Tim Cahill for a chance from the angle, but Kenny saved well from the Australian.

The one bright spot for lacklustre Everton, whose fans booed chairman Bill Kenwright when his face appeared on the big screen, was the performance of Barkley.

The youngster forced a smart low save from Kenny after again cutting in from the right and shooting left-footed towards goal. Then, in injury-time, Fellaini at the far post wasted a header from Baines' free-kick, directing it straight at Kenny when it seemed easier to score.
