Gunners fail with Gonzalez swoop

by Setanta Staff , 20 August 2011 Gunners fail with midfielder swoop

Marseille boss Didier Deschamps says the French club turned down Arsenal's attempts to sign Lucho Gonzalez on loan.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is weighing up his options as he looks to replace Cesc Fabregas and although he has cash to spend it would appear he is also looking at the loan market.

Gonzalez, who is 30, does not fit the bill of typical Wenger signing but Deschamps insists an offer came in for the player and was immediately knocked back.

Fellow Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena was believed to be Wenger's number one target but Deschamps says that is not the case.

"The one that really interests them is Lucho Gonzalez," Deschamps confirmed at a news conference. "Arsene Wenger believes that it is a great player who could be useful to his team even though he does not fit in with his recruitment policy. "

He wanted him on loan but it was not acceptable to us."

Wenger is under pressure to spend as time ticks away in the transfer window and this latest news is unlikely to go down well with Gunners fans, who appear to be running out of patience with the Frenchman.
