Kernan book set for launch

by JP Lonergan , 10 September 2011

Armagh’s All-Ireland winning boss Joe Kernan will soon release an autobiography.

Kernan, who led the Orchard County to their one and only Sam Maguire success in 2002, is to bring out the book entitled ‘Without a shadow of a doubt’, which he worked on alongside the Irish Independent’s Martin Breheny.

The Crossmaglen man, who won All Stars as a player in 1977 and 1982, led Armagh back to a second All-Ireland final in 2003. However, on that occasion they were seen off by Ulster foes Tyrone, who have gone on to win two more since under Mickey Harte.

He previously worked as an assistant to prior Armagh boss Paddy Moriarty from 1989 to 1991, but returned to the inter-county fold as senior boss in 2001 and delivered Sam back up north the following season with a team containing such influential figures as Kieran McGeeney, Oisin McConville and Stephen McDonnell.

Five years after seeing off Kerry in that final Kernan left the Armagh role, having failed to repeat the success, while he had a much less successful spell in charge of Galway for the 2010 season. Several of his sons remain key members of the Armagh panel.
