Sarries pushed Farrell for England

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall has revealed the club supported Andy Farrell's decision to take up a coaching role with England.

The former Wigan Warriors rugby league star was initially reluctant to leave Sarries during the 6 Nations period and take up the job with RFU, alongside Stuart Lancaster and Graham Rowntree.

It was announced on Thursday the trio would fill the void left by Martin Johnson, after he decided to step down as head coach following a poor World Cup showing this year.

The RFU wanted to bring Farrell in on an interim basis but at first the Saracens first-team coach was reluctant, according to McCall.

He said: "Andy's initial reaction was 'no'.

"He wasn't reluctant because of a lack of confidence, but because of his loyalty to Saracens.

"Once he realised, as a club, we were supportive of him getting that experience it was a no-brainer."
