Sligo county board chairman Cyril Feehily has admitted that the summer defeat to Leitrim has had an adverse knock-on effect in terms of county finances.
The Yeats men suffered a surprise loss to their provincial rivals in the Connacht championship at Markievicz Park, a result that proved a considerable factor in the €78,000 loss that Sligo recorded for the year.
And Feehily has admitted that it was not just on the field – Sligo went on to lose to Wicklow in the qualifiers – that Leitrim’s 1-10 to 0-10 upset had ramifications.
"Losing to Leitrim hit us directly for €40,000 and cost us dearly,” he was quoted as saying by the Irish Examiner.
“There was a loss of €20,000 from television and another €20,000 from advertising and other sources.
"To deal with a loss-making situation on our day-to-day running of our affairs is something that is not sustainable and has to be addressed.
"We have to make this our final loss-making year and put it behind us, but we have dealt with this before and will do so again.”
