Kubica leaves intensive care unit

by JP Lonergan , 10 February 2011

Stricken F1 star Robert Kubica has been moved from intensive care following last Sunday’s rallying crash.

The Polish Renault campaigner suffered a partially severed right hand, along with a host of other hand, arm and leg fractures after the smash in Italy and needed seven hours of surgery. He is set for further operations on his foot and upper arm on Friday, but thankfully has left the ICU and gone to a trauma unit.

"His general condition is good, so much so we can programme two operations on Friday," Dr Giorgio Barabino of the Corona di Pietra Ligure hospital was quoted as saying of the Renault driver, who is expected to miss the entire 2011 F1 season.

"Next week we expect to perform the last operation on the patient."

The Lotus Renault team looks set to choose between former Williams driver Nick Heidfeld and reserve driver Bruno Senna as a replacement for the 26-year-old for the season ahead.
