Ranieri walks away from Roma

Claudio Ranieri has resigned as coach of Roma following Sunday’s embarrassing collapse against Genoa.

The club’s former striker Vincenzo Montella, 36, will replace Ranieri until the end of the season. The former Fulham man has been coaching the club’s U15s, with Roma set to unveil him in the senior post on Tuesday.

Roma led 3-0 in Sunday's Serie A clash, only for Genoa to produce a sensational second-half comeback to steal the points and secure a 4-3 victory, while also inflicting a fourth successive defeat on the men from the Italian capital.

The Serie A side are also on the verge of a Champions League exit after slumping to a 3-2 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in Rome on Wednesday, while the Genoa loss leaves then nine points behind city rivals Lazio, who currently hold fourth spot in Italy, the last qualifying position for next year’s Champions League.

Roma face Shakhtar in Ukraine in a fortnight when they will try and stay in this year's competition.

Former Chelsea chief Ranieri had been in charge of Roma since September 2009, having previously been the boss at Valencia and Juventus.

Since Ranieri walked away from Roma late on Sunday, the club’s former coach Carlo Mazzone has denied that he will come out of retirement to take over, while current Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has also been linked with a return to Italy in some of Monday’s newspapers.
