Wexford boss admits Deise interest

by JP Lonergan , 06 January 2012

Wexford football boss Jason Ryan has declared that the Waterford hurling job did interest him when it was vacant.

Ryan, a Deise native, was touted for the role which was eventually snapped up by the recently headline-making Michael Ryan.

However, rather than switch counties and ball size, the Model County boss went on to sign on for a fifth year at the Wexford helm, where he will hope to continue the overall good work that he has been doing with a promising set of players.

"The easiest thing for me to say without causing any trouble is I thought about the job," Ryan admitted in the Irish Examiner.

"It was a big decision, any decision is when you’re involved with a group. You want to make sure you’re not outstaying your job and that you’re the right man for the job.

"It was a case of getting it right in my own head. There are plenty of managers who get different opportunities and offers and I had to weigh everything up."

Wexford were beaten by Dublin in last year’s Leinster final before their qualifier campaign ended in controversial fashion against Limerick. Ryan is hoping his side can put in a big effort again in 2012, but admits it is early days as they prepare for an O’Byrne Cup game against Meath.

"We’ll just be trying to kick-start the year,” he added. “It’ll be about getting the fundamentals right and good as soon as possible and not having to wait to do it in the league but the amount of work that has been done is minimal."
