Jack Wilshere set to miss start of the season
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is set to miss the start of the Premier League season after suffering an ankle injury in training on Saturday.
Wilshere missed the 1-0 Community Shield victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, and is unlikely to be fit to face West Ham at the Emirates Stadium next Sunday despite manager Arsene Wenger’s initial optimistic prognosis.
“He couldn’t take part in the game today because of an ankle problem he sustained yesterday,” the Frenchman said.
“It happened at the training ground. We don’t think it’s bad at all but I haven’t been told whether it will be two days or five days.
“I don’t know how long he will not be available for. It’s a matter of days.”
However, the injury to his right ankle is now thought to be worse than first feared, and Wilshere, who missed six months of last season with a left ankle injury, is struggling to be fit for the clash against Slaven Bilic’s side.
In other news, Aaron Ramsey says Arsenal’s victory over the Premier League champions shows the Gunners have learned how to grind out results against major teams.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the game at Wembley as Arsene Wenger finally won a match against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the 14th attempt.
“We definitely had to sit in at times today, but I think we’ve learned over the years how to sort of play against the bigger teams now,” the Wales midfielder said.
“Sometimes you have to do that and invite them on and get them on the counter-attack, which we’ve done.
“They [Chelsea] have done ever so well against us in the past, so we used different techniques to get the result.”
