McLaughlin nearing Ulster end - reports

by Michelle Fortune , 31 January 2012

Brian McLaughlin's future at Ulster is believed to be coming to an end with reports suggesting the coach will leave the province at the end of the season.

McLaughlin's contract is due to expire in May and it is believed Ulster chiefs have decided not to offer him a new one, despite leading Ulster to the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup in successive seasons.

"In response to media speculation today regarding the Ulster Rugby Head Coaching position, Ulster Rugby confirms that the current coaching contracts are set to finish at the end of the season, and are under review. There will be no further comment at this time," an Ulster statement read.

While Ulster have refused to confirm or deny the rumours it has been reported that Director of Rugby David Humphreys and Chief Executive Shane Logan have identified either John Kirwan or Matt Sexton as a possible successor to McLaughlin.

THe 52-year-old was appointed head coach of Ulster on a two-year deal following Matt Williams' departure in 2009 and under his guidance the province managed to revive their fortunes as they reached the last eight of the Heineken Cup last season.

Despite the success McLaughlin was only offered a one-year extension, which expires in May. While his time at Ravenhill appears to be drawing to a close, McLaughlin will be looking to end on a high with a Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with Munster to look forward to as well as targeting RaboDirect PRO12 success.
