Rangers crash out

Rangers have been knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the fifth round stage, after being beaten 2-0 by Dundee United at Ibrox.

Gavin Gunning opened the scoring for the visitors, then Johnny Russell, who saw an early effort disallowed, scored the second ten minutes before half-time.

A crowd of just 17,822 witnessed the defeat, which sees the SPL as the only possible trophy for Ally McCoist's team, after exits from the Champions League, the Europa League and the League Cup.

Russell had the ball in the net for United after a couple of minutes, but the effort was ruled out after referee Willie Collum ruled decided that Jon Daly fouled Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor in the build-up.

But Dundee United took the lead after 15 minutes, when Gunning met a Gary Mackay-Steven cross eight yards out and headed past McGregor.

Sone Aluko and David Healy both saw efforts at an equaliser thwarted by Dundee United goalkeeper Dusan Pernis.

And Russell made it 2-0 when he slammed past McGregor after being set up by a Paul Dixon pass.
