Louth punish Galway with point

Louth overcame a bad start to earn an excellent point against Galway in Allianz Football League Division Two on Sunday.

Both sides are unbeaten after the Wee County hit 0-11 to Galway’s 1-8 at Pearse Stadium, the Tribsemen failing to follow up a strong first half showing as they scored just two points after half-time.

Danny Cummins helped Alan Mulholland's men fly out of the traps with an early 1-1 as his side flew into a 1-2 to 0-2 lead. Michael Martin and Darren Clarke had traded points to help with that, before Cummins pounced to fire into Neil Gallagher’s net after a Paul Conroy chance had come back off the post.

Nickey Joyce, Martin and Thomas Flynn all pointed as Galway extended their lead to six points, but they then faded and Louth came back with five scores in eight minutes before half-time, Clarke key as they trailed by just 1-6 to 0-7 at the midway point.

Andy McDonnell and Adrian Reid scored early after the resumption to level everything up, but Conroy responded and Mulholland must have hoped that his side would settle back and resume control.

Not so! Sub Eoin O'Connor levelled again for the Leinstermen and exchanged efforts from impressive Galwayman Gareth Bradshaw and Jim McEneaney kept it all square.

With Galway toiling, Louth came close to a famous win as a McDonnell effort came back off one of his own men and Paddy Keenan agonisingly missed the target from two late ‘45 chances.
