CCCC fine brawling counties

by Michelle Fortune , 15 February 2012

The Monaghan and Kildare County Boards have received fines for the half-time melee in last Sunday's Allianz Football League Division Two clash in Clones.

The heated exchange just before the interval marred the game and resulted in referee Joe McQuillan brandishing a red card to Kildare's Brian Flanagan before the second-half resumed.

Flanagan's team-mate Padraig O'Neill was booked along with Monaghan's Dick Clerkin and Dessie Mone but Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney had been confident that there would be no suspensions handed out to either side.

"I didn't really see it. There seemed to be something on the pitch and then it went to the sideline. Then there was people shouting at each other going into the tunnel," he said at the time.

"Joe McQuillan dealt with four people at half-time so I take it that will be it, unless something else comes out of it."

The CCCC examined the incident but decided against taking any action against the players involved, opting to fine both counties instead.

While no details have been revealed, it is believed Monaghan and Kildare have both been fined €5000.
