Carragher reveals cup ambitions

Veteran Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed his hunger to help the club win their first trophy in six years this season.

The Reds will face Cardiff City in the final of the Carling Cup at the end of the month, while an FA Cup fifth-round tie awaits them this weekend against Brighton.

Kenny Dalglish's men are the clear favourites to win both games and Carragher is determined to justify that tag, after placing a real emphasis on doing well in both competitions.

The centre-back believes this season is very much like the 2001 campaign, in which the Reds ended up winning the Treble after lifting the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup - now renamed the Europa League.

Admittedly European success isn't possible this time around, but the Anfield side are in contention for a Champions League qualification spot, and that objective is another firm target.

Carragher told the club's official website: "There are similarities because we're doing well in the cups. We had the added bonus of the UEFA Cup then as well.

"In that season we weren't close to winning the league, but we were challenging for the top three or four - and that's similar to what we're doing now.

"The cup competitions become even more important when you realise you're maybe not going to win the championship.

"It's vitally important for the club, especially because we've gone so long without a trophy."
