PSG: Di Maria wanted to move to France
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has revealed Angel di Maria almost joined the French side before eventually signing for Manchester United.
Di Maria joined United for a British record transfer fee of £59.7million, but he may not have ended up at Old Trafford had the French champions reached an agreement with Real Madrid.
Al-Khelaifi believes PSG had been his preferred destination but the two clubs were unable to reach a deal over the transfer fee.
“For two or three weeks, I have discussed this issue with my friend Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid,” he told Le Parisien.
“We met twice, we made an offer, but we are not agreed on the price. For me it was too expensive. It has nothing to do with the financial fair play. The player wanted to come to Paris, but this was not possible.”
United have since signed Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan and Di Maria, who made his debut in the 0-0 draw with Burnley, believes they will help put the club where they belong.
“It’s true we have not won yet but we will put United where they’ll belong this season. You’ll see. Falcao is a great forward and he will help us,” the Argentina international told ESPN.
